Västerås is a city in central Sweden, located on the shore of Lake Mälaren in the province of Västmanland.
Västerås has a population of 107,005 inhabitants.
Västerås is one of the oldest cities in Sweden an Northern Europe. The name Västerås originates from Västra Aros, which refers to the estuary of the river Svartån.


The Västerås area has been populated since the Nordic Viking age, before 1000 AD. At the beginning of the 11th century it was the second largest city in Sweden, and in the 12th century it was the seat of the bishop.


Today Västerås is known as an industrial city. Big companies like ABB can be found in Västerås. 
And the huge company H&M, a Swedish clothing company, known for its inexpensive and fashionable clothing, was founded in Västerås 1947. Today H&M has more than 1500 stores in 28 different countries and has more than 68000 employees.
