The Royal Family
The Swedish Royal Family or the Swedish Royal House of Bernadotte, consist of: The King, Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, and two members who are not official members of the Royal Family, but are considered part of the Swedish Royal Court, Princess Lilian and Princess Birgitta.
HM King Carl XVI Gustaf has been King since September 15, 1973, and he was born on April 30, 1946. He is the only son of the late Prince Gustav Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Ha ascended the throne upon the death of his grandfather, King Gustav VI Adolf.
HM Queen Silvia has been Queen since June 19, 1976, and she was born on December 23, 1943.
Their children:
• HRH Crown Princess Victoria, Duchess of Västergötland, and born on July 14, 1977.
• HRH Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland, and born on May 13, 1979.
• HRH Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, and born on June 10, 1982.
The two not official members of the Royal Family:
• The widow of the King's late uncle Prince Bertil:
o HRH Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland. Born on August 30, 1915.
• The King's sister:
o HRH Princess Birgitta, Princess of Hohenzollern. Born on January 19, 1937.
The Kings other sisters are also known as princesses, but they are referred to in a specific manner and never actually called Princess of Sweden, nor styled Royal Hihgnesses. The reason is that they married non-royal persons, which was not permitted at the time.
